Benefits of Membership

BROTHERHOOD / SISTERHOOD

When you associate with a fraternity/sorority you are not just meeting new friends or acquiring a place to live and have fun. You are becoming part of a brotherhood/sisterhood, and that brother hood/sisterhood is based on intangible, invisible principles. There is a common bond that is unique and very private. You will enjoy the benefits of friendship that will last a lifetime and will actually grow stronger with time. Being part of a fraternity/sorority is something that cannot be compared to anything else. To know of its existence is one thing, but to experience it is another. Be a part of a great segment of university life - be a part of the Greek community.

SCHOLARSHIP

Scholarship and academic success are two of the most important aspects of your student’s life at SIUC. The fraternities and sororities on campus promote academics in a variety of ways. Members of the SIUC Greek Community are honor students, scholarship recipients, and Dean’s honor roll members. Support and help are always forthcoming through study/quiet hours, study skills workshops, tutoring groups, and many informal programs.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

One of the most gratifying aspects of Greek life is the sense of satisfaction and pride which comes with involvement in community service. Fund-raising events of many kinds are organized each year by fraternities in order to benefit worthwhile charities. Such projects help build moral character through the realization of the needs of people less fortunate. Each year, individual chapters participate in community service projects ranging form working with Big Brothers and Big Sisters to fund-raising drives for the American Cancer Society, Muscular Dystrophy, and Carbondale Women’s Center. Whether visiting residents of a local nursing home, moving furniture for a needy family, painting public buildings, or hosting the annual Inter-Greek Council Safe Halloween for local children, the fraternity member experiences a feeling of well-being and a sense of worth that comes from the simple expression of care of others. Each semester thousands of fraternity and sorority members participate in a wide variety of community service projects. These projects take many forms and benefit many worthy causes. Annual Greeks do more community service than all other student organizations combined.

LEADERSHIP

Fraternities and sororities also provide ample opportunities for students to gain leadership skills. Greek organizations are essentially self-governing, self-running communities. New members have the opportunity to serve on a number of committees within the chapter. Committee members and chapter officers are responsible for the operation of their chapter. In addition to chapter leadership positions, members have many other opportunities within the SIUC community. A sampling of the variety of organizations that SIUC Greeks are typically involved in include: Undergraduate Student Government, Student Programming Council, Black Affairs Council, Hispanic Student Council, and Residence Hall Association.
